Researchers have developed an identification strategy for disentangling these effects, especially when protected attributes influence both financial mediators and final decisions. This scenario, known as treatment-induced confounding, violates standard assumptions but is all too common in credit settings.
New Methodologies and Findings
Enter the Modified Sequential Ignorability assumption, a new lens through which these effects can be identified. By applying interventional direct and indirect effects (IDE/IIE), researchers provide conservative bounds on the natural effects, revealing a clearer picture of discrimination. They've also proposed an augmented inverse probability weighted estimator, boasting semiparametric efficiency.
An empirical evaluation, using 89,465 mortgage applications from New York State in 2022, sheds light on the situation. The findings? A striking 77% of the 7.9 percentage-point racial denial disparity stems from financial mediators affected by structural inequality. Only a conservative 23% is attributed to direct discrimination.
