Revolutionizing Bangla Education with AI-Powered Grading

Bangla, a language spoken by millions across the globe, is about to see a transformative change in educational assessment. In many rural areas, the challenge of limited access to qualified teachers means that students often receive inconsistent feedback. However, a new bilingual evaluation system is poised to change that narrative.

Innovative Approach to Grading

Traditional methods of grading often struggle with the diverse ways semantically correct answers can be expressed. The new system, however, emphasizes semantic correctness over mere lexical similarity. The system fine-tunes a lightweight language model to evaluate responses based on the question, reference answer, and the student's response. Building the Model

The research team has also developed a synthetic bilingual dataset, important for controlled training and evaluation. This allows the model to learn effectively and improve its grading accuracy over time. Across various proprietary and open-source large language models (LLMs), the QLoRA-tuned Qwen3-8B model stands out, showcasing significant improvements in feedback quality and consistency.

In synthetic evaluations, this model exhibited the most leakage-resistant feedback with a RoRa score of 0.819. More impressively, in human studies, it demonstrated the highest agreement with human evaluators, boasting a rho of 0.936 and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.725.
