The new system, however, emphasizes semantic correctness over mere lexical similarity. The system fine-tunes a lightweight language model to evaluate responses based on the question, reference answer, and the student's response. Across various proprietary and open-source large language models (LLMs), the QLoRA-tuned Qwen3-8B model stands out, showcasing significant improvements in feedback quality and consistency.
In synthetic evaluations, this model exhibited the most leakage-resistant feedback with a RoRa score of 0.819. More impressively, in human studies, it demonstrated the highest agreement with human evaluators, boasting a rho of 0.936 and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.725. These figures aren't just numbers. they illustrate a leap forward in AI-driven educational tools.
