Rethinking AI with Marginalized Voices: A New Approach

Artificial intelligence has the potential to both empower and oppress. When designed without inclusive considerations, AI systems risk reproducing existing social biases, particularly affecting minoritized communities. This raises a important question: How can AI development genuinely include these voices?

A New Methodology

AI From the Margins (AIM) offers a fresh perspective. Instead of bringing communities into the process after key decisions are made, AIM suggests a shift in approach. It focuses on integrating the lived experiences of marginalized groups from the very outset of AI design. This isn't about following a rigid protocol. Rather, it's about setting adaptable preconditions that prioritize real-world narratives.

In a Dutch healthcare context, AIM was applied through eight sessions. It involved 13 women and non-binary individuals of color and five municipal policy workers. Using methods like the Biographic Narrative Interpretive Method (BNIM), participants shared their stories. They also co-constructed rules and determined where AI could genuinely benefit their community. The key contribution: translating these narratives into actionable AI policies.

Why It Matters

Why should the AI community care about AIM? Because it challenges the status quo. Traditional participatory AI often limits community input to predefined problem statements. AIM flips the script.
