Reddit Bets Big on New Grads Despite AI's Rise
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman champions new college grads, valuing their AI-native skills amid a tough job market. This reflects a future where youth and AI coexist.
Reddit's CEO, Steve Huffman, has a bold plan: hire new college graduates heavily. In an era where artificial intelligence is poised to take over many entry-level jobs, Huffman sees the value in these fresh faces. He believes that these graduates, who have honed their skills alongside AI, are the future.
The AI Native Advantage
"The kids coming out of college right now learned how to program with AI. They're really good at it," Huffman stated on the "Sourcery with Molly O'Shea" podcast. He argues that today's graduates are more 'AI native' than ever, a term that highlights their fluency with AI tools and technologies from the start of their careers.
Huffman isn't alone in recognizing this potential. While some tech leaders, like Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, warn that AI could eliminate half of entry-level white-collar jobs in the coming years, Huffman is betting on these AI-savvy young professionals to drive innovation.
Challenges in a Shifting Market
Despite Huffman's optimism, the job market for new grads isn't a walk in the park. There's been an increase in the number of people with bachelor's degrees. On top of that, companies have been slowing down their hiring as AI becomes more prevalent. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a 4.4% unemployment rate in February, a slight rise from last year.
Still, Huffman insists on hiring new grads, particularly for engineering roles. "Let’s say AI makes our engineers 50%, 100% or even 10x more productive. We’ll just build more stuff," he stated, emphasizing that AI's role isn't to reduce workforce but to enhance productivity and innovation.
Building the Future with Talent
Reddit isn't just talking. it’s taking action with its Emerging Talent team focused on recruiting young professionals. The company is actively hiring for full-time roles in engineering, sales, and product, and offers internships in machine learning engineering, dubbed "Snooterns."
In a world where many see AI as a threat to jobs, Huffman's strategy raises an essential question: Are companies underestimating the value of human creativity and adaptability, especially from those who grew up alongside AI? Africa isn't waiting to be disrupted, and neither are new graduates. They're ready and building the future.
