Building Energy Management (BEM) is a critical area in the quest to curb energy consumption and reduce carbon emissions. Yet, despite the influx of data from IoT technologies, the development of autonomous, context-aware BEM applications is stuck in a rut. The culprit? A lack of semantic interoperability across data models and contextual representations.
Semantic Models: The Backbone of BEM
Ontologies are emerging as a promising solution. They provide structured, machine-interpretable representations that can unify building data, systems, and operational contexts. In a comprehensive review, 60 semantic models were scrutinized alongside over 20 ontology-based BEM use cases. The study introduced the concept of Ontology Evidence Completeness (OEC) to evaluate whether operational concepts are explicitly mapped to ontology classes.
The findings were telling. Current models adeptly represent physical structures, technical systems, and sensor data. However, they falter more abstract concepts like key performance indicators, services, and control logic.
Bridging the Gaps in BEM
The gaps in semantic coverage push BEM studies towards ontology reuse and integration, often requiring specialized extensions. Whether through external inheritance or application-specific tweaks, researchers strive to patch the interoperability shortfalls.
