MISUMI partners with Oishii to supply Fictiv automation for vertical farms

MISUMI Group Inc. yesterday said it has entered a strategic partnership with Oishii Farm Corp. to support Oishii’s vertical farm in the U.S. with mechanical components through its Fictiv Inc. subsidiary. The companies said they expect to create products that will support the global agricultural technology sector, which faces numerous challenges.

“The global food market represents approximately ¥100 trillion (about $630 billion U.S.) and is increasingly exposed to a range of risks, including extreme weather events, geopolitical instability, and shortages of land and water resources,” noted MISUMI. “In developed economies, these challenges are further compounded by chronic labor shortages, making improvements in supply stability and productivity an urgent priority. Against this backdrop, the adoption of advanced technologies in agriculture has begun to accelerate, particularly in developed countries.”

The company predicted that the smart agriculture or agritech market will experience rapid growth. Robotics, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things (IoT) promise to improve efficiency, supply chain resilience and food security, and sustainability, it said.

Oishii uses technology for sustainable farming

Founded in 2017, Oishii Farm Corp. produces premium strawberries with vertical farms. The Jersey City, N.J.-based company develops and operates smart farms that integrate greenhouse cultivation and pollination with robotics and digital technologies. Last year, Oishii acquired the intellectual property of Tortuga AgTech.

Oishii uses these technologies to precisely control environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, lighting, and airflow while also enabling automated harvesting. Fictiv has supplied mechanical components to Oishii’s Ametalas Farm in Phillipsburg, N.J.

MISUMI said it has made a “significant” investment in Oishii, which “reflects the Japanese monozukuri philosophy of craftsmanship, precision, and excellence in production and exemplifies MISUMI’s commitment to the sustainable growth of the manufacturing sector and the broader monozukuri industry.”

MISUMI and Fictiv to help vertical farms scale

As the first step in their partnership, MISUMI said it will support Oishii with a stable and reliable supply of mechanical components to ensure the consistent operation and scalability of its vertical farming systems in Japan and the U.S.

“By combining MISUMI’s strengths in general‑purpose technologies and standardization with Oishii’s deep, industry‑specific expertise, the two companies will jointly conduct research and development of components for agricultural automation,” stated MISUMI.

San Francisco-based Fictiv said its manufacturing centers in India, Mexico, China, and the U.S. give businesses access to high-quality production, optimize logistics, and mitigate supply chain risk. The company said this ensures that they can move from prototype to production with speed and confidence.

Fictiv said it has delivered more than 40 million prototype and commercial parts and assemblies for early-stage companies and large enterprises. MISUMI acquired Fictiv for $350 million in April 2025.

Tokyo-based MISUMI provides mechanical components in the monozukuri industry, along with tools, consumables, and other related products. It combines in-house manufacturing with distribution of third-party products to serve more than 323,000 companies worldwide.

The company said it supplies more than 30 million standard components, as well as custom parts designed with 3D CAD data and AI. MISUMI claimed that it is maximizing the use of AI “across the entire value chain — from order intake to production and logistics” to expand its offerings and that it “enables one-stop procurement across a broad range of products.”
