Decoding Safety Attitudes in Construction Through AI
A new AI framework, CSAF, analyzes construction workers’ safety attitudes from Reddit discussions, paving the way for targeted safety interventions.
Understanding safety attitudes on construction sites is important. These attitudes determine whether best practices are followed or ignored. Yet, capturing these attitudes at scale has been elusive. Enter the Construction Safety Attitude Framework (CSAF), a novel approach that integrates theory with practical analysis.
The Framework
The CSAF is built on two components. First, a theory-based structure characterizes safety attitudes across eight dimensions. These are examined through workers’ conversations in natural settings. The second component is an operational codebook, enabling measurement of these attitudes effectively.
Applying CSAF to Reddit’s r/Construction community, the framework analyzed 250 posts and comments. The result? A high agreement rate among trained coders, with Krippendorff's alpha at 0.85. This demonstrates that the CSAF dimensions are related yet distinct. Strong coding agreement suggests that CSAF can accurately capture the nuances of safety attitudes.
Automation with AI
To scale its application, CSAF was operationalized through a large language model classifier. This AI tool matched expert human coding with high precision and recall, 0.98 in both cases. When applied to a different trade community, r/Roofing, it retained its accuracy, with Cohen's kappa at 0.89.
What does this mean for the construction industry? With AI, we can now analyze thousands of worker contributions, understanding safety attitudes in a way that manual analysis could never achieve. The CSAF classifier was tested on over 10,000 contributions from r/Roofing, proving its capability to distinguish attitudes by safety topics and track their evolution.
Why It Matters
This tool is more than just an academic exercise. It offers real-world applications for improving construction site safety. By understanding and addressing the underlying attitudes that lead to unsafe practices, targeted interventions can be developed. But, will the industry embrace this technology?
That’s the million-dollar question. Despite its potential, AI in construction faces skepticism. The evidence, however, is compelling. CSAF provides a theoretically grounded, empirically vetted instrument for this very purpose. It’s time for the industry to consider how AI can be a part of the solution, not just a buzzword.
