Cloudflare and GoDaddy Aim to Rescue the Web from AI's Grip
Cloudflare and GoDaddy join forces to counter AI's disruption of web traffic models. They're implementing AI Crawl Control for better content management.
Cloudflare and GoDaddy have teamed up to tackle a significant issue threatening the internet's economic foundation: AI's disruption of traditional web traffic and revenue models.
The AI Conundrum
With AI crawling the web, extracting content for its models, the old web model, search engines driving traffic to content creators, is breaking down. AI answer engines now deliver answers straight to users, often without redirecting them to the original source. The result? Content creators see less traffic and revenue.
This shift has left a sour taste for many publishers. Automated crawlers from giants like OpenAI and Google harvest vast chunks of web content, yet return far less traffic. For many, especially small businesses, this imbalance spells financial strain.
The Strategic Response
To counter this, GoDaddy will integrate Cloudflare's AI Crawl Control into its hosting services. This tool allows site owners to decide how AI bots interact with their content. They can choose to block access, allow it, or even charge AI companies for it. It's a bold move to reclaim some of the value AI systems extract without returning traffic.
Cloudflare, managing traffic for about 20% of the web, and GoDaddy, the largest domain registrar globally, wield significant influence. Together, they aim to reshape online business dynamics.
Building a Sustainable Model
Beyond immediate solutions, the companies advocate for new standards like Agent Name Service and Web Bot Auth. These initiatives aim to identify AI agents and make their actions more transparent, promoting a permission-based web system.
If AI continues to siphon value without reciprocating traffic, the incentive for creating original content could evaporate. Cloudflare and GoDaddy are betting on infrastructure that focuses on identity, control, and compensation to forge a sustainable economic model for the internet's future.
The real question is, will this be enough to realign the web's economic scales? Or will AI's relentless grip tighten further?
