Testing the Imitation Game
In a recent study, researchers set out to test whether LLMs, when simulated as survey respondents, could reproduce human patterns of believing and sharing misinformation. They used participant profiles based on social survey data, examining a mix of network, demographic, attitudinal, and behavioral features. The goal was to see if these AI-generated responses could align with actual human survey data.
Three online surveys served as baselines for comparison. The evaluation focused on whether the LLM outputs could match the observed distribution of responses and mirror the associations between features and outcomes found in the original data. As it turns out, the LLMs did manage to capture some broad trends and showed a modest correlation with human responses. But there's a catch: they consistently exaggerated the link between belief in misinformation and the propensity to share it.
Beyond the Numbers
When linear models were applied to these simulated responses, they showed substantially higher explained variance. The models placed excessive emphasis on attitudinal and behavioral features, while largely ignoring the personal network aspects that were significant in human responses. This suggests a systematic bias in how these models are trained to understand misinformation-related concepts.
