Apple's App Store Dilemma: The Vibe Coding Surge
The App Store's approval process faces delays as AI-powered vibe coding floods the market. Could stricter reviews become the norm?
The App Store is feeling the heat as a wave of new apps hits its shores every month. Artificial intelligence has made building apps a breeze, but getting them approved? That's a different story. Developers report longer wait times, despite Apple's claim that 90% of submissions are reviewed within 48 hours.
The Rise of Vibe Coding
Since agentic coding went mainstream in 2025, there's been a surge in app releases on Apple's App Store. January saw a 54.8% year-over-year increase in new iOS apps in the US, following a 56% spike in December. But what portion of these apps are born from vibe coding? That's still up in the air.
Vibe coding is the new kid on the block, making app creation accessible to just about anyone willing to try. But not everyone is thrilled. Developers are grumbling about longer approval times, James Steinberg from New York City being one of them. He’s waiting six weeks for his app to go live. He says, 'The slowest thing is now the Apple store, not making the app, not marketing.'
Apple's Tightrope Walk
Apple says it processes over 200,000 app submissions a week, averaging a review time of 1.5 days. Yet, some developers aren't buying it, worried the review process could get tougher to keep AI-generated apps, or what some call 'AI slop,' from reaching users.
Forrester analyst Dipanjan Chatterjee thinks Apple might tighten its approval process further. A stricter process may frustrate developers, but it’s necessary to filter out the noise. 'This isn't a problem Apple can reject its way out of,' Chatterjee warns. Apple will need to switch from artisanal gatekeeping to scaling up its curation process.
The Bigger Picture
Developers are rightfully anxious, but what's Apple's alternative? If vibe coding continues to grow, and it will, how will Apple balance showcasing innovation while maintaining quality control? The gap between the keynote promises and the app developer’s reality is widening. Apple needs a long-term strategy, and soon.
The real story here's about the future of app development. How will platforms like the App Store adapt to this rapid pace of change? One thing's certain: the way we think about app creation and approval is in for a shake-up.
