Americans Want AI on a Leash Before It Becomes Our Overlord

A new survey reveals a staggering lack of support for unregulated AI development in the U.S. Most Americans demand rigorous safety measures, fearing the unchecked growth of AI could spell trouble.
A recent survey of 2,000 U.S. adults conducted from September 29 to October 5, 2025, paints a stark picture of American attitudes towards advanced AI. Spoiler: most people aren't thrilled about the current breakneck pace of AI development.
Fear and Loathing in AI Development
Here's the cold truth: 64% of those surveyed believe superhuman AI should either never see the light of day or at least be put on hold until we can ensure it's safe and controllable. Only 5% of respondents think AI should be developed as quickly as possible. Naturally, this flies in the face of the major tech corporations, who seem to be in a sprint to the AI apocalypse.
And don't even get me started on the regulatory optics. A hefty 73% of participants want AI development to be treated like pharmaceuticals, complete with extensive testing before it's let loose on the world. This isn't just a call for regulation. It's a desperate plea to avoid the tech-driven dystopia we're barreling towards.
Regulation or Bust
The survey also reveals a sharp demand for stronger government oversight. About 69% of respondents think the government is slacking AI regulation. This isn't just about safety. It's about accountability. AI firms tout their 'race' for innovation, yet the public is left wondering if this race ends in a fiery crash.
Let's not kid ourselves. The public knows the stakes. A related poll from March 2025 shows that 37% worry AI could lead to human extinction. Yes, extinction. It's the kind of word that makes you question why we're even flirting with superhuman AI without concrete safety nets.
Who Should Drive the AI Bus?
Americans are putting their trust in scientific organizations, with international bodies and independent researchers getting the nod over tech companies. About half believe these entities should be steering the AI ship. AI researchers are seen as the most reliable sources for guidance, over the tech giants who, quite frankly, aren't winning any popularity contests.
With 49% of those surveyed expecting expert-level AI within two years, the clock is ticking. The question is, will the powers that be listen to these calls for caution, or will they continue their reckless charge towards the unknown?
