AI in Academia: To Disclose or Not to Disclose?
AI's role in academic writing raises transparency concerns. As Chinese universities grapple with policy ambiguity, students weigh fear against the benefits of disclosure.
As generative AI becomes a staple in academic writing, the issue of transparency in higher education takes center stage. A study conducted at an English-medium university in China reveals a significant conflict: students' intentions to disclose AI use hinge on psychological factors, which aren't being sufficiently addressed by current institutional policies.
The Psychological Battleground
Analyzing data from 324 students, researchers uncovered a telling dichotomy. Students who feel psychologically safe are more willing to disclose their AI tool usage. On the flip side, those fearing negative evaluation shy away from transparency. This isn't just a passing concern. Psychological safety is key, and it's being fostered, or hindered, by the academic environment.
Supportive teaching practices and clear guidance are essential. If universities want to encourage disclosure, they need to create an environment where students feel safe doing so. Slapping a model on a GPU rental isn't a convergence thesis, and neither is simply adopting AI without addressing the surrounding psychological and policy issues.
Policy Ambiguity: A Double-Edged Sword
Policy ambiguity is fueling fear of negative evaluation, according to follow-up interviews with 15 students. Without clear guidelines, students face reputational risks, which discourages them from being transparent about AI use. If the AI can hold a wallet, who writes the risk model? This question becomes all too real when students weigh their academic honesty against institutional ambiguity.
Why should anyone care? Because the lack of clear policies doesn't just stifle disclosure. It stunts innovation. It keeps academia in a perpetual loop of fear and uncertainty. If universities don’t address this, they risk lagging in a world increasingly driven by AI-enabled research.

Universities need to wake up. The intersection is real. Ninety percent of the projects aren't. But those that are, they need a clear path. Without transparent policies, students will continue to operate in the shadows, and academic integrity will remain at risk.
