Enter the Flourishing AI Benchmark: Christian Single-Turn (FAI-C-ST). This framework does more than assess AI capabilities. It evaluates AI responses against a framework of human flourishing rooted in Christian values. By looking at 20 frontier models, it becomes clear that AI's neutrality is a myth. Instead, these models fall into what can be termed 'Procedural Secularism.' This is a default setting that doesn't hold water when theological consistency is required.
According to the evaluation, there's a systematic decline in how these models perform across all dimensions of human flourishing, averaging about 17 points less effective. But it doesn't stop there. In the important domain of Faith and Spirituality, AI models lag by a startling 31 points. So, what's happening here? Why is there such a gap?
The Training Dilemma
These performance discrepancies aren't due to technical shortcomings. Instead, they stem from how these models are trained. The primary focus has been on acceptability and safety, prioritizing wide-ranging applicability over deeply ingrained moral or theological reasoning. The models are designed to be generally palatable but lack depth in their moral or theological discourse.
This raises an intriguing question: Is AI serving us by being broadly neutral, or is it failing us by not aligning with specific value systems? If AI is to mediate significant aspects of human life, should it remain neutral, or are we missing out on deeper ethical alignments?
